Seachem Cichlid Lake Salt

$15.70

250g

  • Replicates the environment of African Cichlids
  • Contains proper amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium
  • Affects hardness only, not alkalinity or pH

Description

Cichlid Lake Salt™ is a chemically sound blend of salts designed to replicate the natural environment of Rift Lake African Cichlids. It contains all physiologically essential elements such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, and includes trace components such as iron, aluminum, and iodide.

Although the major Rift Lakes contain basically the same mineral salts, they do so in greatly differing concentrations. Cichlid Lake Salt™ is formulated so that dosages vary depending on the lake of origin and need only be added when setting up an aquarium or with water changes. Many competing products are little more than combinations of Epsom salt and bicarbonate of soda. This will not provide a complete replication of the mineral salts that are contained in the lakes of Africa, in particular calcium and potassium. Seachem’s Tanganyika Buffer™ (pH 9.0–9.4) and Malawi/Victoria Buffer™ (pH 7.8–8.4) should be used to adjust carbonate hardness and pH.

Directions

All doses given for 40 L (10 US gallons).

  • Tanganyika: Use 11 g (1.5 teaspoons).
  • Malawi: Use 5.5 g (3/4 teaspoon).
  • Victoria: Use 3.6 g (1/2 teaspoon).

Dosages are based on DI or RO water; for other water, measure hardness (GH) first, then add according to need. For reference, the Tanganyika dose raises dGH by 8.8 units. The Malawi dose raises dGH by 4.4 units. The Victoria dose raises dGH by 3 units.

We recommend the following GH ranges:

  • Tanganyika: 3–5.5 meq/L (8–14 dGH)
  • Malawi: 1.5–3meq/L (4–8 dGH)
  • Victoria: 1–2 meq/L (3–6 dGH)

TIPS: Use when setting up an aquarium and when making water changes. To add salt to an established tank, base dose on water being changed. Do not use salt when simply replacing evaporated water. It is best to dissolve the salt in freshwater before use.

CAUTION: Causes serious eye irritation. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with skin. May cause skin burns. Wear suitable gloves

The 2hr Aquarist – APT Fix

$18.00
Size: 200ml The smarter way to treat algae. Especially effective for BBA, hair/string/fuzz and most forms of filamentous algae. Gently biodegrades completely. Spot-dose up to 1ml per 10L every 24 hours.

AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE

While healthy plant mass is the #1 natural defence against algae, life is often unpredictable. The filter or CO2 diffuser gets clogged. Grandpa overfeeds the fish. The auto-timer takes an unannounced holiday. These shocks ( seemingly insignificant to us) weaken plants and give algae a window of opportunity to spawn.   APT Fix works to rebalance the system by targeting the fundamental weakness of algae- their comparatively less developed protective cell walls. When spot-dosed per the recommended dosage, it instantly arrests algae growth while allowing plants to recover.
apt fix drain dose method This is the most effective approach, but be careful not to let the plants dry out. Avoid this method for treating algae on Mosses, Liverworts (Riccardia and Riccia etc.) and Vallisneria (Tape Grass).
apt fix spot dose method This is our usual approach. To increase effectiveness, pause the filter before spot-dosing. And don't forget to turn the filter back on! The effect should be visible by the next day.

NO COPPER
Most algae treatments use compounds that contain Copper, which is a powerful biocide. The problem is that copper, like other heavy metals, accumulate over time and do long term damage to the tank's ecosystem. APT Fix uses an active compound that biodegrades naturally within 24hours, with no nasty residues.
DOMINANT PLANT MASS
The best natural defence against algae is a healthy dominant plant mass. Tanks with alot of exposed, un-planted areas are far more susceptible to algae, in the same way that fertile open fields invite weeds to grow. Aim to have at least 70% of the substrate planted. Plants are like trees in a forest. With the right conditions, they naturally outcompete algae.
TOP ALGAE MAGNET
The top algae trigger is organic waste and decaying matter. Never over-stock a tank in its early months. Livestock waste contributes significantly to algae issues in new tanks (< 3 months old). Regularly change water the 2Hr Way and remove old/ decaying leaves. Stem plants require replanting of the healthy tops after trimming once or twice. Old deteriorating stems invite algae to bloom.

APT Fix BBA The above shows the result of a single dose of APT Fix via spot-dose method. By Day 2, the inactive BBA would usually change color to red and/or white. These would either decompose, or serve as food for algae-eaters and other microorganisms. By Day 7, the leaf is now mostly free of algae.   APT Fix The above shows the result of a single dose of APT Fix via the drain-dose method. By Day 2, the hair-algae has lost some of its green color. By Day 5, all the hair algae has been deactivated. You can remove it completely using a fine brush.

Interpet Sludge Buster

$10.00
100ml Interpet Sludge Buster adds essential bacteria to the aquarium which rapidly breaks down solid organic waste for a cleaner, healthier aquarium. This sludge comes from fish excretion, excess food and dead plants. Without using Sludge Buster, solid waste will build up and make the aquarium look unsightly and harbour unwanted pathogens that will affect fish health. Organic sludge will also block the aquarium filtration system. Using Sludge Buster can minimise aquarium maintenance. Use Sludge Buster every 2 weeks to ensure optimum sludge breakdown. Sludge Buster can be used at the same time as any other Interpet aquarium treatment and will not discolour the water. Use the dosage table and pipette or measuring cup provided to treat the aquarium water. Ensure you follow the instructions provided in the Guide to Fish Health carefully.
  • Pure culture of safe, effective bacteria to break down aquarium sludge waste
  • Contributes to a healthy aquarium and improves appearance
  • Reduces aquarium and filter cleaning and levels of disease causing bacteria
  • Easy to use – dosage table, pipette and measuring cup included
  • Treats 3,600 litres (790 gallons)

JBL PlaCollect

$20.00
  • Convenient and effective way to catch flatworms (planaria) without using chemicals
  • Equip trap with food bait (JBL NovoTab), use suction pad and cord to hang it at an angle over the bottom and empty trap the following day
  • Convenient emptying of the trap: open lower plug and upper screw top and rinse under running water
  • Completely non-toxic in freshwater and marine water
  • Package content: 1 complete planaria trap (13 cm long) with transparent cord and suction pad for slanted positioning
Flatworms (Platyhelminthes): To this class of animals belong the unpopular planaria which sometimes massively reproduce in aquariums and then can become a disturbing pest. They mostly lead a hidden existence and appear only at night. After using a planaria trap many people are surprised how many flatworms were present in their aquariums! Since chemical means against planaria have mostly unwanted side effects, the JBL planaria trap is a very good alternative without harmful side effects! Flatworms in marine water: Flatworms in marine water can look very beautiful, such as slugs. But they can also cause problems for corals, when they increase alarmingly and infest the corals. There are Turbellaria which, extremely well camouflaged, even can’t be found on a closer look. This also includes e.g. the Acropora-eating flatworm which can infest stony corals and lead to serious damage. Through an iodine bath of the affected coral outside the aquarium (2 ml Betaisodona/l) the Turbellaria will be paralysed and can be flushed away with a strong water jet. The wrasse Pseudocheilinus hexataenia is considered as the recommended natural enemy of choice, as it can even recognise clutches of worms to eat them.
